Before you start (what you'll need)

  • A device running a supported OS (Windows 10/11 or later, macOS 10.12+; Android 6+; iOS 13+).

  • A stable internet connection.

  • If using premium features: your Malwarebytes license key or an active subscription and an email for the Malwarebytes account.

  • Administrative (installer) access on the device.

Quick overview (the steps in one line)

  1. Download the official installer from Malwarebytes.

  2. Run the installer and accept permissions.

  3. Create or sign in to a Malwarebytes account.

  4. Enter license key (if you bought Premium).

  5. Update definitions and run a full scan.

  6. Configure real-time protection, scheduled scans, and exclusions.

Step-by-step setup

Windows

  1. Download: Go to the official Malwarebytes site and download the Windows installer (.exe). (Always use the vendor’s site or your vendor portal—avoid unknown mirrors.)

  2. Install: Double-click the downloaded file, accept the User Account Control prompt, follow the on-screen installer (Accept EULA, choose “Install”).

  3. First launch: Open Malwarebytes after installation. It may prompt to remove conflicting products — follow prompts if you want Malwarebytes to handle it.

  4. Create/sign in: Click Sign In to use a Malwarebytes account (needed for license syncing and cloud features) or continue in free mode.

  5. Activate: If you have a license, go to Settings → My Account or click Activate License and paste your license key or sign in to your account.

  6. Update: Malwarebytes usually updates automatically. Click Scan or go to Settings → Security to force update definitions.

  7. Run a scan: Start with a Threat Scan (recommended). When it finishes, review detections and choose Quarantine for anything unwanted.

  8. Configure protection:

    • Enable Real-time Protection modules (Web protection, Malware protection, Ransomware protection) if on Premium.

    • Schedule scans: Settings → Security → Scheduled Scans (or use Task Scheduler integration).

    • Set exclusions only for known safe files or folders (Settings → Allow List).

  9. Reboot if prompted.

macOS

  1. Download the macOS .pkg from Malwarebytes’ official site.

  2. Install: Open the .pkg, follow system prompts. You’ll need to approve Security & Privacy permissions for system extensions or full disk access.

  3. Sign in/Activate with your Malwarebytes account or license key.

  4. Update & scan: Update the database and run a scan. Quarantine anything suspicious.

  5. Enable protections: Enable real-time protections and configure scheduled scans and exclusions in Preferences.

  6. Permissions: macOS may request Full Disk Access — grant it for complete scanning.

Android

  1. Get the app from Google Play (search “Malwarebytes” and check the official publisher).

  2. Install & open: Grant requested permissions (access to storage, usage data, etc.) when prompted.

  3. Sign in/Activate: Sign in to use premium features or enter a license.

  4. Run a scan: Start the first scan to clear any background threats.

  5. Enable Web Protection (if available) and set up periodic checks or notifications for suspicious activity.

iOS

  1. Download from the App Store (Malwarebytes Mobile Security).

  2. Install & open: Follow the onboarding steps. iOS limits background scanning—Malwarebytes focuses on web protection, phishing protection, and privacy checks.

  3. Sign in/Activate for premium features if needed.

  4. Enable VPN or web protection prompt if you want browsing protections.
